Toys for Tots Party 2003!
by Sebastian Volcker
Charity for the Children, Esteem for the Marines, Love of Fraters

Tekes and friends came to the home of John Devaney and Andy Hight for the Second Annual Toys for Tots Party. The buffet and bar was as always impressive, the company of course delightful as it was composed of many fraters. The felling of the great Christmas Tree provided some excitement to the party and a lot of jesting (sorry John).

The theme of this party -- I state the obvious -- is us, together, giving to others. At our October meeting the Rho-Kappa Alumni Association decided that this would also be a logical moment recognize those fraters who have been giving to others on their own. We realize that giving is its own reward but it is always nice when somebody else notices. At this effect we created the PKAA Philanthropist of the Year award, to be given to fraters who give of themselves to the community. We were very proud to extend this award to six worthy fraters: Ellery Bradley PK1 For raising of $1,120 personally and $21,900 with his Team for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life; John Devaney PK60 For raising of $2,600 for the Whitman-Walker Clinic by Running the Washington D.C. Marine Corps Marathon and for Hosting the Toys for Tots Party; John Benton PK76 For raising of $740, with the help of his family, for the American Heart Association by participating in the three mile walk on October 4, in Byrd Park, Richmond, VA Patrick Wright PK112 For his work on the Board of Directors of the Fair Lakes 8K Race to raise awareness and funds for Free Bone Marrow Screening Clinics, Russ Hancock PK135 For Volunteering for the Mechanicsville Fire Department In Hanover, Virginia; Darryl Morris PK171 For Volunteering for the Crozier Fire Department and Rescue Squad In Goochland, Virginia. Congratulations fraters you are worthy Tekes. (on how to nominate a frater for next year go to the Award section of www.TKEcentral.com.)

But how well did we do this year? We did wonderfully well, granted the winter storm kept some away but we still collected One Hundred and Forty-Three Toys for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and $335 in gift cards for the patients of the Whitman-Walker Clinic of Northern Virginia. Of course we could not have done it whitout the help of the Arleen Samuels and Girl Scout Troop 920 who started us of with 68 Toys.

We are very greatful to John and Andy, our gracious hosts who kept on smiling as guests tracked-in horrifying amounts of black dirt onto their light carpeting. And while it might sound conceited I must say that I am very very proud of what we are doing as individual Tekes and as an Alumni Association. Tekes are very Cool!!

At the party we learned of Captain John Monihan PK133 (Picured above wiith the bear) has been called to active duty to serve in Irak. Needless to say we are all very proud of what he does and our admiration is only tempered by concern. Go carefully.

Girl Scout Troop 920 collected toys for Tekes' Toys for Tots Party. How did the Tekes get so lucky? Well Arleen Sammuels leader of Troop 920 dated frater Stuart Hallett back in the Longwood days and they have kept in touch over the years. When Stuart mentioned www.TKEcentral.com to see what mutual old friends were up to, Arleen checked it out and beside the old familiar faces also came accross last year's Toys for Tots Party.
Arleen liked what she saw, contacted yours truly, and even though she remembered me as an irritating smartass she still decided to help us, and boy did she help us! Arleen, co-leader Sandy Krevonick, and the Girl Scouts of Troop 920 gathered an amazing SIXTY-EIGHT (68) Toys for the Teke Toys for Tots Party. I'd say the likelyhood of beating last year's 108 toys at the party on Saturday 6 December 2003 is looking very very good indeed!
Thank you Troop 920! And a mega thank you to: Arleen, Sandy and all the lovely moms of Troop 920 who made it all possible.

TKE GRIC get Together at Hooters on Broad

Holmes Family Reunion

Holmes Family Reunion which took place in VA Beach the weekend of 10/10/03. PK Tekes in attendance included John Fox, Neil Riddock, Clay Hughes, CJ Maurice and Jon Powell. Featuring Georganna of Hooters. More pictures including JP's conquest.

TKEcentral: Okay what is this Holmes thing?

Clay Hughes: In September 1997, a group of like-minded miscreants and one-time Longwood students decided to take a trip to the greater Virginia Beach area to visit Frater John Fox. We stayed at an average waterfront hotel which happened to be also occupied by a very large family reunion - the "Holmes" family reunion - all the way down to matching purple shirts. We watched them from our balcony down by the pool going through a grotesque display of chicken, ribs, and shrimp (the shells of which were being unceremoniously chucked into the pool). So, as drunk folks are bound to do, we made it the theme of the weekend. We had Holmes II in 2000 and then Holmes III a few weeks ago (though we traded off Rob Johnston for a Jon Powell - for equal representation of bald men). Neil was supposed to have shirts made but he dropped the ball. Oh well - there's always a next time.

GRIC Tekes got together at Rare Old Times, the waitress was lovely, the food good and the pints flowed a little too easy as per our bill. We started off the evening with getting the newsletter ready for mailing. Folding and and stuffing envelopes apparently required more skill and coordination than nature bestowed on our fellow fraters. So it you receive a newsletter folded inside out, or anything missing you can blame it on the genetic pool your brothers spawned from or the drink, or both.

The surprise of the evening was CJ Maurice who we had not seen in a long time, he is doing something different in the Henrico Police force, but I could not hear exactly over the din of the bar. The moment was immortalized with Clay hughes, phone/camera (Sanyo 5300) as Gray and Sebastian had forgotten their cameras.

NOVA Tekes at Fat Tuesdays
June 24th 2003

First Annual Fat Tuesday's Four Frater Festival. Pictured (left to right) Mike Dunn, Brian Sullivan,
Mark Thompson, Pat Wright.

While there has been an unofficial limit to only 4 fraters appearing at one time, we feel it is Quality & not Quantity that makes our monthly gathering so special.

During our Four Frater Festival (trademarked by Mark
Thompson), it was decided our next event will take
place on WEDNESDAY, JULY 23RD at --drum roll please--
HOOTERS in Fairfax, VA (6:30 p.m. to ???).

This should give everyone enough time to get their
kitchen passes in order. Not to call anyone out, but
the following frater's names came up during discussion
& we feel your presence is necessary at our next
gathering:

Devaney, Monihans, Doley, Kasper, Johnston, Steinbach,
Koenigsberg, the "Hammer", and anyone else in the NOVA
area.

Keep on truckin'!

Patrick - official member of the Four Frater Festival

Greater Richmond Tekes went South of the river for this month's get together, held at Hooters the congenial place founded by Frater Edward Droste and we had a good turn out, even though only one southside brother showed (Bo Johnson). John Bridgeforth made a first time appearance at our GRIC dinner, thanks to frater Kozuch (good job Adam) as you can see Grant was overwhelmed with the emotion over the reappearance of this long lost frater. It was also a get together celebrating the virtual recovery of Grant's virtual appendectomy (see Clay's sign). And we took this opportunity to deliver Big D's Good Samaritan Award for 2002.

Actives moved over 6,000 bricks
Saturday 5 April 2003

The Actives helped out getting Clover Forest Plantation ready for the first wedding to be held this Easter weekend. The Tekes worked until sundown on Saturday moving an estimated 6,000 bricks that had been an eye sore for over twenty years near the old plantation home. While the brick pile was not moved in its entirety a major dent was put into it. Thanks fraters for you assistance.

Greater Richmond Tekes got together at Sticky Rice on 2327 Main Street; a wacky Sushi place, that also serves Hamburgers and Hush Puppies by the bucket. It figures that we have an excellent turn out when we are in the smallest restaurant to date. The adage the more the merrier proved true again. Clay felt the urge to share and called up Pat Wright (Nova) and then Matt Fletcher (Portland Oregon) who ended up talking to a lot of the guys. It was good to see Russ again now a daddy. Thanks to Clay and John's wives for lending us their husbands for the evening even though they have their hands full with their short people.

Beef and the Frenchman rated the Sushi as good, and a good value. Frenchman recommends the Sticky Balls.

Five Tekes braved the miserable weather to swap stories. It was good to see our Spanish Teach, Brian Litman, he is having quite a few days off with the snow, schools have closed some 11 days in Richmond this winter so far. Gray Lipford and Darryl Morris are still playing volley-ball to meet women. Mark Cole is looking for a new house but having a grand time living with Andy Hicks and Adam Kozuch in the mean time.

Six Tekes braved one of numerous Virginia snows to get together at Famous Dave's. Mark Cole just moved up to Richmond with his wife, Michelle, Andy Hicks move down from Nova and Adam Kozuch left the Birdsong abode and moved to the right side of the river. The funny part is that all four are living together (poor, poor Michelle) while the Coles are looking for a new home. In another picture Andy was holding up a challenging note to some fraters but it did not come out and I do not remember what it said. Everybody present was doing well. Thanks to Allison for sending Chris over. YITB

Regional Leadership Conference
Arlington VA
Friday 14, Saturday 15, Sunday 16, January 2003

Yours truly intended to attend the Regional Leadership Conference in Arlington but that Friday morning a fire broke out at my neighbor' house, Longwood Professor Richard Couture, who died earlier this month. The fire destroyed one wing of the house and killed four cats I was not able to rescue.

However actives Alan Carrier and Kenny Turner, their fee paid by the Alumni Association, braved the snow of the century and did attend.
