Charity for Kids, Esteem for Marines, Love of TKE. On Saturday December 14, 2002, a number of Fraters joined up at John Devaney and Andy Hight's House in Sterling for which I can only be described as a man's man buffet, with fiery and milder chicken wings, two kinds of meatballs, sausages, a glazed ham, fried mozzarella, egg-rolls, gourmet cheesecakes &c and yes there was also a tray of veggies. All the liquor was brand name, the wine bottles had corks and the beer was premium. John and Andy know parties. Oh yes also giant TV in den.As always it was great to see the guys and catching up. The cherry on the cake of course was that we were getting together to do good. As the evening went on the toys accumulated under the tree and spilled out into the room. Grant made a grand entrance on a kids bike (show-off ;-). One small matter however had not been satisfactorily dealt with... where to drop of the toys? Keri Wertz recalled that the Marines would be collecting Toys at the Movie Theater that night. Keri called and confirmed that one Marine was indeed in attendance. In these matters of logistics it is always prudent to bring in the military, Captain John Monihan and myself drove in his car to the Theater to seek our Marine. we found him in a sea of Starfleet uniforms. We had unknowingly stumbled in a Star Trek fan club doing their part for Toys for Tots. While John was mesmerized and perplexed by the Trekies/Trekists in attendance, I forged on (I have attended one Star Trek convention and was therefore unflappable) and made first contact with the Marine. We had hoped that our Marine would drop by after his tour with Starfleet was over and pick-up the toys at the party. He was willing but his wheeled ground transportation was of inadequate size and we left with a phone number. On Sunday John Monihan called the Marines to arrange for a pick-up. Our party was an unexpected bonus for The Corps, all the more welcome as the five other collection places on their route yielded but 3 toys while we had... drum roll ... one hundred and nine toys, which should make a lot of kids happy and The Corps feel appreciated. John Devaney also collected $460.00 worth of gift cards for the patients at the Whittman Clinic. To think that the party could have been canceled on account of John's pneumonia (he is recovering nicely). We are very fortunate. Fortunate indeed that we were able to "inherit" John and Andy's established party, which allowed our first Philanthropic action as an Alumni Association to start in high gear! | Tau Kappa Epsilon's Rho-Kappa Alumni Association Gives to the David K. Buchanan Scholarship |

|
On Sunday 6 October 2002, Ampthill Plantation held a book signing for the launching of The Jarman Legacy by Richard Couture (All proceeds of the sale of the book to go to the Rotunda Fund.)
At this venue Sebastian Völcker as president of the Tau Kappa Epsilon's Rho-Kappa Alumni Association (Longwood Chapter) presented Longwood University President, Dr. Patricia Cormier, with a $415.00 donation for the David K. Buchanan Scholarship. Dr. Cormier expressed how important scholarships are for Longwood and how pleased she was with this gift and how she was open to any ideas on how to improve contributions. Völcker made the suggestion well received by Dr. Cormier that a space be created on the Longwood website that would have a list of the recipients of the David K. Buchanan Scholarship so that all could see how many Longwood students, David, his parents and his friends have helped over the years. Völcker believes donors would appreciate seeing their gifts at work. |

8th GRIC DINNER
Wednesday August 28, 2002
The Guys got together at the Tobacco Company while it is a great looking location the rest was a disappointment. The happy hour hailed by Richmond Magazine as the "Best in Richmond" was a joke. The Free Buffet was non existent and the service was pathetic. Of course WE have a good time regardless of where we are.

| The usual crew minus Grant got together at Potter's Pub. The surprise of the evening was Ellery Bradley hanging out with the boys for the evening. Next meeting will be Awful Arthurs on Broad, where we hope the cook will be on hand unlike Potter's. But what can one expect from an ENGLISH Pub... | |

The usual crew got together at Mios where Chris Beach did a quick pop in on the way to (hopefully) close on the perfect house (Hey he likes asbestos siding ;-). We did note that even though we were in the Westend, the westend fraters did not show (slackers). Frater Casanova was having a rough day beside having dealt with 10 traffic lights (I swear he counted them!) coming over to Mio's and his car having been broken in earlier in the week, he just found out on the way over that his evening constitutional to be provided by one of his four (!!!) girlfriends would have to be postponed. Yeah we were all crying ;-) Frater Littman is the proud owner of a new Cherry Red Toyota Tundra. Big D is remodelling. Oh and ladies...Gray is single. We finished the evening over at Grants place enjoying a drink on his porch... very nice. |

The pool playing was terrible, but the $1 beers, 3 Mile Island Sauce, a special appearance by a long lost frater, and "bloody" Coronas all made for a great time - I don't know if Bungalow Billiards will be the same ever again! |

4th Greater Richmond Get Together. |
Triple gets Thumbs up for their food and for the pretty waitress Sarah ;-) |
|
Six of us got together at Triple on Broad Street: Grant Hayes, Gray Lipford, Brian Littman, Big "D" Morris, Sebastian Völcker and ... drumroll ... Frater Beef Birdsong from the Carolinas. We had some laughs over finding out (or rediscovering) how incredibly shallow frater Casanova can be (name withheld to protect the guilty), were impressed to hear that Big "D" two years out of college bought a house, and flattered that Beef wished to spend his first vacation in three years with us. Next get together will be at Mio's (8801 Three Chopt Road near Regency Theater) even though I remember it as an armpit and it gets dismal reviews in Richmond.CitiSearch.com, Grant and Gray vouch for it.

NEED MORE PICTURES!! The 15th Anniversary RCB was held Saturday 20 April 2002 on board the American Rover, a three-masted schooner (The ship is docked in Norfolk near the Waterside Festival Marketplace). The event was organized by Seamus M. Webb. The RCB, what I remember Most of the actives and a good number of Alumni trickled in Norfolfk on Saturday afternoon. Mike Miller and Shawn Marshall waited for people to show up and ended having to fetch fraters at the hotel itself. Some of the older guys at Hooters took naps (Jabba) while others headed for Waterside a mall holding more bars than stores which perfectly fitted our Agenda. At the apointed time the fraters and their significant others met on the dock. Some fraters had not seen each other in years, yet we all fell into comfortable conversations catching up on life and past happenings. Michael Clements, PK 003, Mike Estes, PK 007, Sonny Merchant, PK 012 and his wife Lisa, Sebastian Völcker, PK 015, Keith Johnson PK 026 & wife Leslie, Chris Douglas, PK 038 and his wife Shelly, Mike P. C. Hart, PK 050 and his daughter Willow, Steve Wertz, PK 052 & wife Keri, John Devaney, PK 060 and Andy Hight, MO, J. Will Birdsong, PK 062, William Flannagan III, PK 065 & wife Jenny Sue Glascow, Shawn Edward Marshall, PK 075, Patrick S. Wright, PK 112, Mike Miller, PK 137 and Jessica Rummell, Brian L. Wilson, PK 144 & fiancée Dorian, Grant C. Hayes, PK 145 and Suzannah, Daniel Britton Harrison, PK 155, Christopher Edward Beach, PK 160, Conway Dooley, PK 165, Alan Carrier, PK 175, Joseph Hopkins, PK 176, Lindsey Ortiz, PK 178, Matt Hescock, PK 179, Will Hottel, PK 180, Seamus Webb, PK 181, Dave Mauch, PK 182, Chris Strand, PK 183, Jonathan Brooks, PK 185, Mark Waters, PK 186, Chris Costanza PK 187, Justin Hoffman, PK 189, Dan Steele, PK 191, Ryan Bonney, PK 193, Damien Coy, PK 196, Robbie Dickinson, PK 198, Mike Chechile, PK 199, Kenny Turner, PK 200, Nathan Heggestad, PK 201 and Kenny Conklin, PK 202. (Let me know who I missed or added as I am relying on memory possibly affected by the Captain) The line to the open bar saw many blatant abuses of high scroll numbers by fraters (PK15) and significant others (Suzanne, Dorian). The actives (Seamus Webb, Chris Strand) announced the annual mock awards with tact, dressing up some horrendous awards with delicate metaphors. The cruise was smooth as silk and nobody suffered from mal de mer. Upon debarking a few of the older guys headed for "Diesel" a run down pizza place/bar where John Devaney toyed with the hearts of some women and Grant got shot down (what is wrong with that picture?), some headed home while the majority headed for the hotel -- stopping for a splash in a public fountain (PK 175) -- for an in room party which moved from floor to floor as complaints came in (maybe the Hotel will put everybody on the same floor next time). Having exhausted the "delights" of Diesel the stragglers, all nine of them, piled in Dorian's vehicle and headed for the Hotel (Dorian if you shocks are shot, I can probably recall all who were there and pass the hat). After failing to find the mobile Teke party the same group caught up with some Tekes in the hotel bar and listened -- to Damien Coy's consternation and the others amusement -- to Mike Estes talking about sconces and accent lightning. No Sonny, a sconce is not a Wisconsin cheese. After closing the bar the mobile party was located but proved to be too smoky by all the ex-smokers (Wertz), dragging Beef away from the eye candy and ending the party with a night cap in a smoke-free room. |

2nd Greater Richmond Get Together There we are under a Viking banner and Ellery is not even there. Jason was up from Farmville, come to find out he just bought a house in the Mechanicsville area. Bo Johnson took the time to come even though he pulls very long hours (the price of being the boss). Clay was able to extract himself from baby duty. As for the rest of us we are either free agents or have been married so long that the wifes like the occasional alone time. Chicken wings and brother tales, it does not get much better than that. Location was Buffalo Wild Wings. Next time is going to be at Joe's Inn (Jason pulled scroll on Grant). |

| First Monthly Get together of the Greater Richmond area a success. (Thursday January 31, 2001) Grant Hayes (PK145), Gray Lipford (PK113), Brian Littman (PK 101), C.J. Maurice (PK084), John Benton (PK076), Mohammed Stowdah (PK064), and Sebastian Völcker (PK015) got together at At the Bw-3 Buffalo Wild Wings Grill in Olde Towne Shopping Center next to Stein Mart. (7801 West Broad, Suite 10, Richmond, VA 23294 Tel: 804-672-8732, cross road is Hungary Springs Road). . I would have been a success if only two fraters had shown up so with seven it was great. No significant others came along so the conversations were pretty much unbridled. Grant took the time to hang out with us even though he had an important meeting on Friday for which he was not prepared (looked like an all nighter) and C.J rescheduled his night shift so he could be there. Next time I'll bring the camera to record the moment. The next get together is for Thursday, February 28, 2002 at an undisclosed location for now, may be Dick Cheney will be there ;-). |
