The David Buchanan Scholarship

David Kevin Buchanan
(February 12, 1966 - July 6, 1989)
Pictures contributed by John Pastino

The David Buchanan Scholarship – awarded to an incoming Longwood freshman with strong high school qualifications and financial need – was created by David's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Neal Buchanan, to honor the memory of their beloved son David, Longwood graduate, Second Lieutenant Army Reserves, ROTC cadet and TKE member. It was our privilege that Michael Sheffield PK19 was asked to represent TKE and co-sign the document establishing the scholarship. Over the years as individuals, as a chapter, and Since 2001 as an Alumni Association, Tekes have helped David's parents, however modestly, to fund the scholarship. Serendipity made it that the first recipient of the David K. Buchanan Scholarship was Jenny Devaney, the little sister of David's fraternity brother and good friend John Devaney PK60.

In 2001 we raised $170.00... in 2002 we increased our donation to $415.00, 2003 we donated $425.00, in 2004 we donated $200.00.

"On July 6, 1989 we lost our brother to a tragic death. I would like to start this thread in memory of him by asking any frater who has a funny story about Buck to please tell it. I think he would appreciate us remembering him. Here is to you Buck."

Jason Blount, PK21

"I remember him lip sinking the Lettermen with the super sappy Teke Sweetheart song in Lancer Cafe, he might also have been singing it live, I have the picture in my minds eye but it does not come with sound, he was not even a Teke then and he was rushing us hard. Man that took courage :-) . I also remember that Buck and Koners carried us each time during the singing of the closing ode.."

Sebastian Volcker, PK15

"My Moment of Silence....... Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave today and every day."

Scott Kasper PK55

"The cow lick - man he had a cow lick that wouldn't quit - that one stash of hair that stood up and would battle any gel, cream or Vaseline victoriously - he always made fun of my high school - I can hear him clear as day joking the Miller School for misfits... I do miss him "

"Heres to you Buck Buck - we will always remember..."

"Some Fraters you hung out with more than others. Dave was one I never really spent a lot of one-on-one time with. I wasn't too sure about Buck until one day he picked up a softball bat and started jacking balls up against the outfield fence...left handed. I thought it was nice to have a left handed power hitter in the lineup. I am reminded of Dave every time I see one of those mini-kegs of German beer in the grocery store. He had good taste in beer. It was a sad day when we lost him."

"If you are OLD like me, you might remember this. Buck and I had this thing going where every time I saw him I called him 'boy' and he called me 'daddy'. It was funny as hell. One friday morning at 4:30 am!!!!!! ( for those who hung with me at DT Bradley's on thursday nights know I had not been in bed long) I hear this loud 'Daddy, Daddy, wake your ass up' I look out the window and Buck is doing PT for ROTC. He starts ranting and raving how I went out drinking and spent all his "lunch money" at DT"s.He is hollaring how I am a drunk father that listens to Hank William's Jr (Buck loved Hank) and that I beat my wife and it was just hillarious because he was making up this country song about his 'daddy' as he went along. Now he is standing on the wall outside of the TKE Hall doing this shit waking up everyone on three floors on South Cunningham, until... a girl threw a shoe out her window and hit him in the head. Of course he took the shoe when he left which did not amuse the girl at all. Doug you are right. Buck could smoke a softball."

Jason Blount, PK21

"I toast one to you...

1. Close up...so you don't forget what I look like.

2. Bringing in a KEG to Cox Hall for a party...yes we used to have kegs in
the dorms"

"I never got the opportunity to meet Dave, but from all the stories that I have heard through the years, I feel like I did know him. Wish I had the honor of making his acquaintance..................... cheers Dave!"

"Ellery showed that picture of Dave with me and it brought tears to my eyes...thank you Johnny for sharing those!

I first met Dave when he was a GDI and always thought of him as an offbeat, everybody's good friend sort of guy. He was always offering a joke or funny story to make you laugh. His manner was always gentlemanly and his wardrobe was impeccable (as shown by that scary striped sweater he had in that picture!) We'll all forgive him for that one indiscretion...

Dave was one of the first guys I remember saying he was on board with the new fraternity. He liked what he saw in the founding brothers and once told me he was looking for a place to belong and TKE was just that for him. He wanted in more than life, and didn't stop until he was initiated.

He shared about not being all that popular in High School and found college offered a new beginning for him. ROTC was his passion and his committment to it was undaunting. It was almost fitting that if he had to be taken so young, that it would be doing what he loved to do for his country.

Our favorite joke was going bargain shopping to Popes' Dept Store. If I couldn't get anybody else to go with me when I wanted to go, he'd go with me. What deals we got!!! I have no clue if that place still exists in Farmville anymore but it was special for us. We laughed alot together on those trips. [Popes is still in Farmville, TKEcentral]

Mostly, Dave embodied all the qualities as a TKE...integrity, humor, honesty and a sense of devotion unsurpassed. You were his family, his life while at LC...and he will always be missed...

Thanks for letting me share and remember our friend Dave...."

In 2002 we felt that the PK Alumni Association was strong enough in its membership to reach out to the community at large. As our constitution had to be redrafted we decided to create an expanded position for the Association's Hypophetes (Chaplain in Teke linguo) by adding philanthropy to that officer's taks.

At the same meeting the constitution was ratified Darryl "Dig D" Morris stepped up to the plate and was elected to the new position. He felt that the Marines' Toys for Tots program would be a worthy cause for our group. Showing our Esteem for the United States Marine Corps Reserve by helping them make kids holiday brighter had tremendous appeal.

John Devaney PK60 and Andy Hight MO553 had been holding a Toy drive party for the Whitman-Walker Clinic of Northern Virginia, the largest AIDS Service Organization in Virginia over the last few years. The needs for toys for the Clinic had become less and John and Andy offered to share the party with the Rho-Kappa Alumni Association. When things click this way you know it was meant to be.

We held our first Toys for Tots party on Saturday 14 December 2002 during which we collected 109 Toys.

To read more about the parties go to the News section of the website

Our Third Annual Toys for Tots party was held held on Saturday 4 December 2004.
