"Pemberton on Patrol"
Acrylic on stretched Canvas
3' X 4'

Captain Thomas Pemberton of the Continental Dragoons. Was the owner of Clover Forest Plantation, which is my Bed & Breakfast.

In his will the Captain mentions "pictures" but unfortunately it is unknown whether there was a portrait of him. We do know there exists a portrait of his daughter but have never seen it. Since there is no known portrait of Pemberton, my wife and I thought it would be good to palliate to that...

Of course not knowing what he looked like I made that part up. His uniform on the other hand could be researched. This is what his uniform could have looked like toward the end of the war if he managed to acquire all the prescribed parts of the uniform, such as a French Brass helmet. Pemberton might have worn the older uniforms as pictured in the background or simply worn buckskins with but a ribbon to show his rank which is how general Nathaniel Green spent most of the war.

The composition was very much inspired by Edouard Détailles' "Haut les têtes! La mitraille n'est pas de la merde!" Of course I am not claiming to be on par with that great artist.
"Pemberton on Patrol" appeared in Fall/Winter issue of Virginia Bride p.11.
