Blue aka Blueberry is the head ram at the farm.. He is a very nice fellow who enjoys getting petted and will show his appreciation with his grunts.. For fun, Blue will ram you and if you don't expect it he'll take you down in a flash! You can easely tell the rams from the ewes as the boys have the monk haircuts from head butting each other and the wool is worn away. The girls are not so big on battling.
Blue is a Miniature Babydoll Southdown. It is a rare breed, which really means that because the individuals within the breed are not consistent (ie not uniform looking, differing wool quality, varrying size) it is not a desirable commercial breed. They come in black, white and apparently also spotted, I have yet to see that in our flock. Blue will not end up as mutton. Though my wife and I hated to admit it when our vet Kate Hussman told us that we had a pet flock we have come to terms with that concept. As Dr. Kate pointed out woolly friends had names and they were not going to end up on the BBQ. Their main task is keeping the grass down and providing us with wool. |
